Rep. Cuellar Announces $500,000 Earmark to Pave Colonias Roads in Webb County

The Upgrades were Made Possible by Community Project Funding Secured by Dr. Cuellar in FY24

Laredo | Tony Wen, Press Secretary (202-856-8750), March 14, 2024

Today, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) joined local leaders in Laredo to announce a $500,000 federal earmark to pave colonias roads in Webb County. The upgrades were made possible by Community Project Funding secured by Dr. Cuellar in the FY24 Appropriations bills.

Roads in the surrounding colonias linked to State Highway 359 often become hazardous to travel during inclement weather. These improvements will enhance connectivity within and outside these communities for safer commutes, easier access to emergency services, and increased economic opportunities.

“As Laredo continues to grow, securing robust federal transportation funding for South Texas remains a top priority of mine in Congress,” said Dr. Cuellar, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee. “The road improvements announced today will improve the quality of life for State Highway 359 colonias residents and ensure our community has the infrastructure it needs to facilitate further growth. Thank you to Commissioner Wawi Tijerina for working with me to deliver for Webb County.”

Dr. Cuellar has long worked to secure federal transportation funding for South Texas. Last year, he announced over $1,000,000 in Community Project Funding for the El Cenizo Streets Improvements Project. Additionally, over $291.9 million in federal funding has been announced for projects in Webb County from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, a bill that Dr. Cuellar helped pass in 2021. In the 2024 TxDOT Unified Transportation Plan, the Laredo District is authorized to receive over $1.9 billion, of which nearly $1.5 billion is federal funding.
