Congressional Report
Dear Friends,

I would like to provide you with an update on my activities during the last week of the August District Work Period.  I look forward to returning to Washington this coming Monday.

Over $1.5 Million in Federal Funds Awarded to Laredo Non-Profit

This week I presented over $1.5 million in federal funds to a Laredo-based non-profit, Serving Children and Adults in Need (SCAN). The money will allow SCAN to start a new program called Mujeres Sanas en la Frontera (Healthy Women on the Border) which will provide culturally informed care to at-risk women living along the border.

Congratulations, SCAN, and keep up the good work!

My Participation in White House Initiative on Educational Excellence Roundtable

We need to expand access to education for Hispanics across the state of Texas and the nation and provide more opportunities for educators to address pressing issues in our communities.  This past week, I spoke on a roundtable with the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence and Texas A&M International University President, Dr. Ray Keck about how we can work together on these issues.  I applaud the good work TAMIU and Laredo Community College have done here in Webb County and look forward to continuing our joint efforts.

My Participation in Smart Border Security Roundtable with Senator Cornyn

On Thursday, I joined U.S. Senator John Cornyn, elected officials, local business leaders, and others to participate in a "Smart Border" Roundtable in Mission. As the debate on immigration reform continues, I will be working with my colleagues to seek local input, specifically regarding what is needed at our ports of entry on the southwest border to boost safe and efficient trade and travel, including new technologies, infrastructure and staffing, public-private partnerships, and intergovernmental coordination.
Congressman Cuellar discusses ways to provide smart border security with Senator Cornyn and local officials and business leaders in Mission, TX.

My Outreach Coordinator for Starr County, Nichole Hernandez attended "Keepin' it Rio Market Days" in Rio Grande City.
