Congressional Report

Dear friends,

Please take a moment to read my latest update from Washington and Texas Congressional District 28.

In this week's congressional report, I've included information from the Department of Homeland Security about a new trilateral agreement between the United States, Canada and Mexico that allows travelers to apply for expedited screening programs to promote legitimate travel across the three countries. I also recently spoke to students participating in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Congressional Internship Program in Washington, D.C.

And in case you missed it, I have provided a link to my YouTube page where you can view the entire cybersecuirty video conference I hosted last week throughout my district.

Lastly, I've also provided some updates from my district, a constituent and intern spotlight, and information on how to prepare a monthly budget.

United States Announces Trilateral Agreement with Canada and Mexico to Expand Trusted Traveler Programs

The Department of Homeland Security
(DHS) has joined Public Safety Canada and the Secretariat of Governance of Mexico in outlining the first steps toward the creation of a North American Trusted Traveler network. As part of the agreement, Mexican nationals who are members of Mexico’s Viajero Confiable program will be able to apply for the U.S. - Canada NEXUS trusted traveler program, making them eligible for expedited screening benefits upon arrival at international airports in the United States and Canada. Click here to read more about this program on the DHS Web site.

Speaking at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute in Washington

Last week, I spoke to the Summer 2015 Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) interns in Washington, D.C., about the importance of gaining hands-on experience through internships and pursuing your dreams. I had the pleasure of having CHCI intern Leslie Martinez (top right) in my D.C. office this summer. I also met with Kelsey Castaneda, a CHCI summer intern from Mission, Texas, in my district.

Cybersecurity Video Conference

Last week, I hosted a cyber-security video conference throughout my district in order to provide businesses, law enforcement personnel and the general public with tools and knowledge on how to protect themselves against cyber attacks. If you missed this video conference, you can watch the entire video by clicking here.

Meeting to Discuss Community Needs with City of Palmview
On August 4, my southern district outreach coordinator met with representatives from the City of Palmview to discuss the use and need for federal funds and upcoming events in their area. Pictured above from left to right are Palmview Fire Chief Jerry Alaniz, Director of City Services David Nacianceno, Outreach Coordinator Nichole Hernandez and City Manager Ramon Segovia

Constituent Highlight: Maria Alaniz
Maria Alaniz (pictured above) and her daughter came to my Laredo District Office due to a discrepancy with her monthly Social Security payments. My Constituent Services Representative was able to fix the issue immediately and her monthly benefits were reinstated.

Intern Spotlight:
Rasoul Khaledi - Washington, D.C. Office
Rasoul Khaledi is a freshman at American Heritage School and interned in my Washington, D.C., office during the summer, where he was able to gain a better understanding of how the federal government operates.

Read more about Rasoul and other interns in my office here.

Find out how to apply for an internship with my office either in the district or in D.C. here.
