Rep. Cuellar Announces $3,785,488 in Federal Funding to Help Working Families and Seniors Pay Energy Bills During COVID-19 Pandemic

LIHEAP funding will assist individuals in Hidalgo County

Mission, TX—Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced $3,785,488 in federal funding to County of Hidalgo Community Services Agency through the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). These LIHEAP funds, awarded through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, will be used to help low-income households and seniors in Hidalgo County pay energy bills during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Texans should not have to choose between paying their utility bill or feeding their family during these challenging times,” said Congressman Cuellar. “This federal investment will make sure working families and seniors are able to keep their homes cool through the summer months.  As a senior Appropriator, I am committed to funding vital programs such as LIHEAP, and will continue to provide services to the most vulnerable in our community. I would like to thank Executive Director of County of Hidalgo Community Services Agency Jaime Longoria and the rest of his staff for their hard work during this pandemic.”

As a senior Appropriator, Congressman Cuellar helped secure $900 million for LIHEAP in the CARES Act. This LIHEAP funding can be used towards home heating, cooling, crisis, weatherization activities, and related support services. This supplemental funding to provide assistance to help prevent, prepare for, or respond to home energy needs related to the coronavirus.
