ReyesLAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) - The FBI has released statistics showing the murder rate in cities along the Texas-Mexico border to be lower than other major cities across the nation. These statistics compare Laredo to larger cities like Detroit and Washington D.C. Crime can and does happen anywhere. Laredo is no different. KGNS spoke with Laredo P.D. about how Laredo compares when it comes to crime. Leticia Garza says, "I feel safe. I've heard of the violence in Nuevo Laredo but haven't seen it first hand here in Laredo." Leticia Garza has lived in Laredo all her life and says Laredo is safe. She says like other cities crimes do happen but if your not involved in criminal activity you have less chances of becoming a victim. Garza says, "There is crime and incidents everywhere. I believe if your not involved in anything nothing will happen to you. I think things happen to those who get involved in it." According to a report released by Congressman, Henry Cuellar, the latest FBI statistics show the murder rate in cities along the Texas-Mexico border to be lower than other major cities across the nation. Congressman Henry Cuellar says, "The top ten cities with the highest murder rate, non are along the border. We have so many law enforcement officials on the border the bad guys understand if you do a crime they're going to go after you." These stats compare Laredo to larger cities like Detroit and Washington D.C which reflects the national average at 4.5 murders per 100,000. Congressman, Cuellar says these statistics clearly show that some of the safest cities in the U.S. are along the border. Congressman Henry Cuellar says, "Laredo is a lot safer then some of the big cities. Of course there are cities that are more comparable but i'm trying to use these cities with the highest murder rate. Do we have problems like any other city? Yes we do." So how does Laredo compare to cities of the same size? Investigator, Joe Baeza explains. Investigator Joe Baeza says, If you look at the murder rate for border communities were pretty much on par. There's nothing glaring saying we're out of control. We have crimes like any other city. No better or worse. We have crime like everybody else does, but at the same time it's not out of control." According to the Laredo Police Departments 2013 annual safety report, the past three years the department has seen a nine percent drop in murder rates. Last year the department only had three murders happen in Laredo. The safety report also shows an increase in the number of people being arrested for committing a crime. Over 9,000 people were arrested last year.
