Congressional Report
Dear Friends,

I would like to share with you several updates during my work week in Washington, D.C.

State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Subcommittee Meeting

At this week's State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Subcommittee Meeting I was pleased to greet the President of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete.

This meeting focused on an open discussion regarding how much U.S. assistance is helpful in combating aids and providing environmental conservation.

Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU)

Dr. Antonio Flores, President and CEO of San Antonio-based Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) stopped by my office to discuss the importance and impact Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education has on Hispanic-serving Institutions.

I strongly support the implementation of STEM programs in all institutions of higher education and I will continue to do the best in my power to provide these institutions with the necessary resources to improve such programs and ensure future STEM graduates.

Congressional Unmanned Systems Caucus Science and Technology Fair

This week, I had the opportunity to speak at the Unmanned Systems Caucus Science and Technology Fair, which showcased technology and research conducted by universities, industry representatives, and federal agencies.  It is estimated that unmanned systems could become a $13.6 billion national industry in the next three years.  Texas stands to see the third most gains in the country in terms of job creation and additional revenue.

I would like to thank Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi graduate student Brittany Duncan for showing me a quadcopter (featured in the photo below), a machine like a helicopter that hovers for surveillance and personnel recovery.

Official
Recognition of Monica Navarro, San Antonio Journalist

This week, I submitted to the official record of the House of Representatives a statement of recognition for Monica Navarro, reporter with KWEX - Univision San Antonio.  For 30 years, Monica has gained respect and recognition from members of her community by producing and reporting stories which have directly impacted the lives of her audiences.

In result, she became a two-time Emmy Winner, awarded the National Journalist of the Year by the Hispanic Media Awards in 2003, and most recently became a recipient of the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists - Henry Guerra Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Journalism.

My full statement may be accessed here on my website.

Affordable Care Act (ACA) Update

The Department of Health and Human Service’s Office of Health Policy released a report this week that millions of Americans eligible to buy insurance through the new health exchanges will only pay $100 or less a month in premiums because of tax subsidies. Americans who make up to 400 percent of the federal poverty level are eligible for subsidies that ensure they’ll only pay a certain percentage of their income for a health plan. Using census data on Americans’ income levels, researchers were able to extrapolate how many of them would be paying less than $100 for monthly premiums for silver plans, or the second lowest-cost plan in the upcoming Marketplace.

Sincerely,

Congressman Henry Cuellar
