Dear Friends,
I would like to share with you several updates during my work week in Washington, D.C.
Op-Ed: Immigrants Build the Nation
In my Op-Ed in The Hill, I made the case that our greatest enemy in achieving comprehensive immigration reform is time. We must seize on this moment to push real reform of our broken immigration system that secures our border, develops a guest worker program that grows our economy, and provides legal status for the millions of immigrants living in the shadows.
Grant Presented to Serving Children and Adults in Need
This Monday, I presented a total of $446,883 in federal funds to Serving Children and Adults in Need (SCAN), Inc, a non-profit organization that advocates for healthy development of families along the Texas-Mexico border.

These funds were awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families through its Basic Center Program (BCO) and will be used to sustain SCAN's current runaway and homeless youth program for the next three years.
Nationwide there are an estimated 1.7 million homeless youths. In 2012, through their Runaway and Homeless Youth Program (RHY), SCAN had 63 successful cases of children who were reunited with their families, a number expected to increase with the support of these funds.
Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of Falcon Dam
This week, I joined friends and colleagues in Zapata to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Falcon Dam, which provides energy and water to communities on both sides of the Rio Grande River. Falcon Dam, like our international bridges and crossing facilities, is a great example of the partnership between the United States and Mexico.
Later that afternoon, I also spoke at the Zapata Rising event with State Representative Tracy King, State Representative Ryan Guillen, Zapata County Commissioner Jose Emilio Vela, and Zapata County Judge Rathmel.

Laredo Builders Association 1st Annual Cornerstone Award Ceremony
This week, my outreach coordinator for Webb County, Jorge Garcia, attended the 2013 1st Annual Laredo Builders Association (LBA) Cornerstone Award Ceremony. The Laredo Builders Association is approaching its 25th anniversary and its Board of Directors felt that it was time to recognize its "cornerstones". The individuals that were recognized have been strong contributors to the success of the LBA as well to the growth of the city of Laredo.
