Congressional Report

Dear Friends,

Below please find information on what I have been up to in Washington and also in the district.

Last week, President Obama rejected the Keystone XL pipeline. The pipeline will create thousands of jobs in Texas. Texas needs support from Washington in order to develop a better energy industry that will empower our local economies and families. The president's rejection of this pipeline is a great mistake.

I have also been hard at work with my staff to improve infrastructure within my district and help my constituents with federal issues.

Lastly, please find some useful information on how to file a complaint based on the Consumer Action Handbook.

I am looking forward to visiting with constituents and officials in my district this week.

Rep. Cuellar Issues Statement on the President's Rejection of the Keystone XL Pipeline

Last Friday, President Obama rejected the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline after years of consideration. I disagree with the President's rejection. The Keystone XL is a great opportunity to create thousands of good jobs in a vastly growing energy sector. The House has voted several times to allow for construction of the pipeline and each time I have voted in support.

According to the Department of Energy, the Keystone XL pipeline would move up to 830,000 barrels of oil from western Canada and create tens of thousands of American jobs in many U.S. refineries, the majority of which are in Texas, where families and communities can grow and develop from added jobs. The pipeline would also reduce our dependence on Middle Eastern oil. The President's rejection opens the door for other competing countries to come in and reap the benefits of North American oil.

Meeting with FAA to Discuss Modernization of the Laredo International Airport

On November 4 in D.C., I met with Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart and representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration to discuss the completion of the modernization of the Laredo International Airport such as construction of a new air traffic control tower and upgrading the Instrument Landing System.

Discussing Available USDA Programs in Floresville

On November 3, my outreach coordinator for Wilson County met with City of Floresville and Wilson County officials to assess damages and discuss USDA programs available to the city and county after a strong storm generated from Hurricane Patricia damaged local schools, homes and infrastructure. From left to right are: Outreach Coordinator Gilbert Lafuente, Commissioner Gamez, Mayor Garza, Judge Richard Jackson, USDA representatives Joe Ochoa and R. Maldonado and City Manager Henrietta Turner.

Discussing Service Academy Nominations at Judson High School

Last week, my outreach coordinator for Bexar County, Pete Arguello, attended College Night at Judson High School, where he met with liaisons from the Service Academies, students and parents to discuss our nomination process for the academies.

Constituent Spotlight
Jorge Leija came into my Laredo District Office last month requesting assistance with the U.S. Department of State. He needed additional documents in order to obtain his passport. My constituent services representative, Sylvia Segovia, worked with Mr. Leija and the U.S. Department of State to fulfill the requirements necessary to obtain his U.S. passport and he received it within three weeks.
