Congressional Report

Dear Friends,

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving this past week with loved ones.

I was in the district for a few events, including a tour and discussion regarding the federal courthouse in San Antonio with Sen. John Cornyn, Congressmen Lloyd Doggett and Will Hurd of San Antonio, and Mayor Ivy Taylor, among others. The facility, originally designed as a movie theater and used during the 1968 World's Fair, presents many functional problems today, and I recently introduced legislation for emergency appropriations to build a new facility.

On Tuesday, I attended the opening of a new veterans center in Atascosa County which will better serve those from our area who have served our country.

My district staff also attended events across the region, which you can read about below.

Touring the Federal Courthouse in San Antonio

On November 24, I met with Texas officials and fellow Texas Members of Congress to tour and discuss building and security issues with the current John H. Wood federal courthouse in San Antonio that originally designed as a movie theater for the 1968 World’s Fair in San Antonio. My colleagues in Congress and I are working to provide funding to build a new one that will much better serve our community

Dedicating the Veterans Service Center in Jourdanton

On November 24, State Senator Carlos Uresti, State Rep. Ryan Guillen, Atascosa County officials and I dedicated the new Veteran Service Office in Jourdanton. The new facility will add more space for veterans to apply for benefits and other services.

Service Academy Day in Laredo

On November 23, my outreach coordinators from Bexar and Webb Counties presented to students, parents and counselors at Texas A&M International University in Laredo about the process for applying to our nation's five military academies.

Meeting with veterans in Laredo
On November 24, my outreach coordinator for Webb County, Alec Martinez, attended the unveiling of three new columbaria in Laredo with representatives from the City of Laredo, Webb County, Area Health Education Center (AHEC), the Fernando A. Salinas Charitable Trust and the Laredo Vietnam Veterans Coalition. The columbaria will add 144 new spaces for Veterans Section at the City of Laredo Cemetery.
