Congressional Report

Dear Friends,

Please find information about the work I am doing for you, both in Washington and in the district.

Recently, during the House Committee on Appropriations, Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies, I asked Federal Aviation Administrator Michael Huerta about the FY16 FAA budget and funding for airport towers in my district.

In the district, my staff helped with Service Academy Day in San Antonio, which is an informational session where interested high school students can get information about attending one of our nation's five prestigious service academies.

My staff also met with constituents over farm and ranch concerns and attended the 88th anniversary of the Roma-Miguel Aleman International Suspension Bridge.

You'll also see a spotlight from one of the interns in my office and some helpful resources for filing your taxes for free and how to get help if your having trouble making your mortgage payments.

As always, thank you for your time and please reach out to any of my offices if you need help with a federal issue.

Meeting with FAA Administrator Huerta and Chairman Diaz-Balart during THUD Hearing

On March 2, I met with Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (THUD), and Federal Aviation Administration Administrator (FAA) Michael Huerta during the hearing for the House Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on THUD to ask about the Fiscal Year 2017 budget for the FAA, as well as hiring practices and public-private partnerships for projects.

U.S. Service Academy Day in San Antonio
On March 6, my outreach coordinator for Bexar County, Pete Arguello, participated in the U.S. Service Academy Day at the University of Texas at San Antonio campus. The informational session was for high school students, parents, teachers and counselors who are interested in attending one of our nation's five prestigious service academies: the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy. A nomination from a member of Congress is required to apply to one of these institutions.

Meeting with Floresville constituent

On Tuesday, my chief of staff, Cynthia Gaona, met with Jason Talley of Floresville in my San Antonio District Office to discuss issues concerning health coverage, farm and ranch issues.

Meeting with Starr County and Mexican officials in Roma
This past weekend, my southern district outreach coordinator, Nichole Hernandez, attended the commemoration of the 88th anniversary of the Roma-Miguel Aleman International Suspension Bridge in Starr County. The suspension bridge opened in 1928 and was the only bridge of its kind on the Rio Grande Valley, but was taken out of service in 1979 when a new bridge was constructed. My office has been meeting with leaders at all levels in the U.S. and Mexico to try to preserve the international suspension bridge, which is an important cultural and historic structure as an international pedestrian crossing. Pictured from left to right are Roma Mayor Roberto A. Salinas, Craig B. Thompson of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Miguel Aleman Mayor Ramiro Cortez Barrera.

Intern Spotlight
Francis Atwell - Laredo District Office

Francis Atwell of Laredo is an intern at my Laredo District Office. He is a recent graduate of Texas A&M University in College Station, where he majored in political science.

IRS: Free Tax Return Preparation for Qualifying Taxpayers

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

In addition to VITA, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. The IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with nonprofit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.
