In the months ahead, Congress is expected to consider major reforms to America’s health care system. Lawmakers have proposed wide-ranging ideas to change the direction of our health care policy, and the debate to come could shape the health care landscape – including your family’s health insurance – for decades.

As the health care conversation approaches a critical turning point, I want to share your views on reform with my colleagues in Congress. Will you please take a few moments to complete the survey below?

In the months ahead, Congress is expected to consider major reforms to America’s health care system, which will likely include provisions to expand access to health insurance and provide tax relief to help low-income families afford health care. Do you believe that health care reform is needed? Yes. Almost 50 million Americans lack health insurance, and the rising cost of health care is a major burden on our economy. It is time for a new direction.
No. Today’s system has served America well for decades, and now is not the time to tackle major reforms.

One proposed health care reform is to require insurers to offer coverage to all patients, including those with pre-existing conditions who are sometimes denied coverage today. Do you support this idea? Yes. It is wrong for the health insurance system to lock out the patients in greatest need of care, and many health insurance providers have agreed that allowing more Americans to access health insurance is a sensible step forward.
No. Health insurers are private companies that should have the freedom to determine which patients to insure.

Some proponents of health care reform have proposed creating a public health insurance program, along the lines of Medicare, that any American could choose to buy into. Do you support this idea? Yes. Existing public health insurance programs, such as Medicare and the VA, provide care to millions of Americans with lower overhead costs than for-profit insurers. All Americans should be able to choose such a program from among other options on the health care market.
No. The establishment of a public health care program would create unfair competition for private insurers, who deserve the right to compete in a free and open market.
