Rep. Cuellar Delivers for South Texas Public Schools

Laredo | Tony Wen, Press Secretary (202-856-8750), April 1, 2024

Last month, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, championed provisions in the FY24 government funding bill that will deliver billions of dollars to South Texas schools, including federal grants for public schools and special education programs.

“As a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, I was proud to secure major wins for South Texas public schools in the FY24 government funding bills,” said Dr. Cuellar. “The key to success in the twenty-first century is a quality education, which is why I fought for federal programs that expand educational opportunities for South Texas students. These investments will make a meaningful difference in our children’s lives and bring great progress to Texas’s 28th Congressional District.”

Specifically, Dr. Cuellar championed provisions that will provide:

  • $19.1 billion, an increase of $20 million for Title I Grants to Local Education Agencies, which provide federal education funding for low-income schools to ensure children, regardless of income, can acquire a high-quality education
  • $14.2 billion, an increase of $20 million for Special Education Grants, which provide federal education funding to local education agencies to serve students with disabilities
